Subway Caves Lava Tubes

Explore a Real Lava Tube!

The Subway Caves Lava Tubes are located about 15 minutes outside the northern entrance to Lassen Volcanic National Park. A lava tube is formed when the surface of the lava solidifies and the molten lava still flows underneath. When the molten lava drains, a lava tube is left. The Subway Caves is a huge lava tube, about .3 miles long and big enough to walk through. With interpretive signs along the way, this is a super educational experience. Make sure to bring a flash light and walk carefully! The floor of the tube is uneven in spots and it is dark inside the tunnel.
